Graphics Settings for Performance
Competitive PUBG prioritizes frame rate over visual fidelity. Higher FPS means smoother mouse input and faster reaction times. Most professional players run the game at the lowest possible graphics settings to maximize frames.
Recommended competitive settings: Anti-Aliasing set to Ultra (smooths edges without performance cost), Post-Processing set to Very Low (removes blur and bloom effects that obscure enemies), Shadows set to Very Low (shadows are resource-intensive and rarely help you spot enemies), Textures set to Medium (minimal performance impact, better visual clarity for spotting players), Effects set to Very Low, Foliage set to Very Low, and View Distance set to Ultra (does not affect player render distance but helps with terrain loading).
Importantly, player models render at the same distance regardless of your View Distance setting. This is a common misconception — lowering View Distance does not let you see enemies sooner. It only affects terrain and building render distance.
Sensitivity Configuration
Sensitivity is deeply personal, but there are general principles that apply to all players. Your sensitivity should be low enough that you can make precise adjustments at range, but high enough that you can perform a 180-degree turn in close quarters without running out of mouse pad.
A starting point for PUBG sensitivity: set your general sensitivity so that a full swipe of your mouse pad (roughly 30-40 centimeters) turns your character approximately 360 degrees. This translates to roughly 28-35 in-game sensitivity at 800 DPI, or 40-50 at 400 DPI.
For scoped sensitivity, most players use lower values than their general sensitivity. A common approach is to set your 2x scope sensitivity to 80% of general, 3x to 60%, 4x to 50%, 6x to 40%, and 8x to 30%. This ensures that your crosshair moves at a comfortable speed regardless of zoom level.
Vertical sensitivity multiplier should be set to 1.0 (matched to horizontal). Some players set it slightly higher (1.1-1.2) to compensate for vertical recoil during sprays, but this is a matter of preference.
Keybind Optimization
Default keybinds in PUBG are functional but not optimal. Consider these commonly recommended changes:
Bind lean-left and lean-right to mouse thumb buttons if your mouse has them. This lets you lean without lifting your fingers from movement keys (WASD). If you do not have thumb buttons, Q and E remain the best options.
Bind your throwables (grenades, smokes, molotovs) to easily accessible keys. Many competitive players use G for frag grenade and rebind smoke and molotov to nearby keys rather than cycling through the default grenade wheel.
Set your zeroing keys to something accessible. The default Page Up/Page Down keys are awkward to reach in the middle of a sniper duel. Consider binding zeroing to mouse wheel up and mouse wheel down.
Rebind crouch to a toggle rather than hold. In PUBG, you frequently crouch for extended periods while behind cover, and holding the key creates unnecessary finger strain.
Audio Settings and Awareness
Sound is one of the most critical information channels in PUBG. Footsteps, vehicle engines, gunshots, and bullet cracks all provide positional data that can determine whether you live or die.
Set your master volume high enough to hear footsteps clearly at 30-40 meters. Many players run PUBG audio louder than is comfortable for music or movies because footstep audio is subtle. Consider using a volume limiter application to protect your hearing from sudden loud sounds (explosions, red zone, vehicle crashes) while keeping footstep volume audible.
HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) should be enabled. This provides significantly improved directional audio, making it easier to determine whether footsteps are above, below, or beside you. HRTF was added to PUBG in a major audio overhaul and is unanimously recommended by competitive players.
Disable any surround sound or virtual surround features in your headset software. PUBG's native stereo audio with HRTF provides the most accurate positional information. External surround processing actually distorts directional cues.
Monitor and Display Settings
If your hardware supports it, play at the highest refresh rate your monitor allows. A 144Hz or 240Hz monitor provides noticeably smoother visuals compared to 60Hz, and the input lag reduction is measurable. Ensure your Windows display settings match your monitor's native refresh rate.
Set your in-game render scale to 100. Values above 100 supersample the image and destroy performance. Values below 100 render at a lower resolution and scale up, reducing visual clarity.
Use fullscreen mode rather than borderless windowed. Fullscreen grants exclusive GPU access to PUBG, resulting in lower input lag and higher frame rates. The trade-off is slower alt-tabbing, but the competitive advantage is worth it.
Finally, disable V-Sync in both the game settings and your GPU control panel. V-Sync introduces input lag that is unacceptable in a competitive shooter. If you experience screen tearing, consider enabling G-Sync or FreeSync through your GPU software instead, as these technologies eliminate tearing without adding input delay.
