Beginner's Guide to PUBG: From Your First Drop to Your First Dinner

Everything new players need to know about PUBG — from understanding the plane path and parachuting mechanics to looting efficiently and surviving the first five minutes.

Understanding the Basics

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) drops up to 100 players onto an island where the last player — or squad — standing wins. Before each round begins, all players board a cargo plane that flies a randomized path across the map. You choose when to jump and where to land, which is arguably the single most important decision in every match.

The playable area shrinks over time via a series of "blue zones." If you are caught outside the safe zone, you take increasing damage each phase. The blue zone forces engagements and prevents players from simply hiding at the edge of the map for the entire round. Understanding the zone timer and planning rotations early is what separates experienced players from beginners.

Choosing Your Drop Location

Hot drops are named locations directly under or near the flight path — places like Pochinki, School, or Military Base on Erangel. These areas attract many players and guarantee early action, but they also carry the highest risk of dying within the first two minutes.

For new players, we recommend landing at medium-tier locations that are slightly off the flight path. Places like Lipovka, Primorsk, or Mylta on Erangel offer enough loot to gear up without the chaos of a hot drop. As you grow more comfortable with the gunplay and looting mechanics, gradually push yourself toward busier locations to build your combat confidence.

When parachuting, aim to reach a speed of 234 km/h by looking straight down before leveling out. This technique lets you cover maximum horizontal distance while arriving at your chosen location faster than opponents who float slowly.

Looting Efficiently

Speed is everything during the loot phase. Prioritize finding a weapon immediately — any weapon. An S1897 shotgun in your hands is infinitely better than the M416 in the next building. Once you have a gun, systematically clear nearby buildings for an assault rifle, a backpack (Level 2 or 3), armor, healing items, and ammo.

A solid baseline loadout for mid-game includes: one assault rifle (M416, AKM, or Beryl M762), one designated marksman rifle or sniper (Mini-14, SKS, or Kar98k), a Level 2 vest and helmet, at least five first-aid kits, a handful of boosters, and 150+ rounds of ammo for your primary weapon.

Do not over-loot. Spending eight minutes searching every room in a compound while the zone closes is a common beginner mistake. Grab what you need and start moving toward the safe zone with at least 30 seconds of buffer time.

Combat Fundamentals

PUBG's gunplay rewards positioning over raw aim. Before engaging an enemy, ask yourself: do I have cover? Can they see me? Is a third party likely to hear my shots and push?

When firing, crouch or go prone to reduce your recoil. Tap-fire or burst-fire at targets beyond 50 meters. Full-auto spray is effective only in close-quarters situations. Practice controlling the vertical recoil of your favorite weapon in the training mode — the M416 with a compensator and vertical grip is the most forgiving rifle for new players.

Always use the lean (Q/E) keys when peeking around corners. Leaning exposes less of your body, making it harder for enemies to land clean shots. In third-person perspective (TPP), use the camera advantage to look around walls and trees before committing to a peek.

Surviving to the Top 10

Your first priority in PUBG should be survival, not kills. Play the edge of the zone, rotate early, and avoid unnecessary fights in the open. Use vehicles to cover large distances when the zone is far, but remember that vehicles are extremely loud and attract attention.

In the late game (top 15 and beyond), movement becomes critical. Crawling through grass, using terrain undulations for cover, and pre-planning your next safe position before the circle moves are all habits that will dramatically increase your placement. Smoke grenades become invaluable for crossing open ground in the final circles.

Use PUBG Search to review your matches after each session. Analyzing where you died, how long you survived, and what your damage output looked like gives you concrete data to improve on — rather than relying on gut feeling alone.
